On the beach....in a shady spot as it was lovely and warm....
A visit to Bayeaux was deemed necessary...and worth it too....
The tapestry was probably made in England though, quite how the French ended up with it...tut! I suppose the French...or Normans...won...so to the victor the spoils....anyway....it was 'discovered' in the 18th Century hanging in the church at Bayeaux....so there it remains...but in a museum...
At the real Bayeaux tapestry.....living in Hastings at the time its all relevant....
It was probably completed in the 1070's well after the battle....its probably not wholly accurate as, as per the usual way of things, the victors get to put their angle on it all....anyway, its the virtually complete story of Willy 1 eventually getting it together to pop over for a daytrip and staying for quite a while...though of course, his demise was somewhat sickening...
Back to the cloth in question...Charles Dickens reckoned it was 'the work of amateurs'...well as there werent any professional embroiderers he was right....but then he wrote tedious books...so all's fair in love and war.....
William Morris wasnt quite so tediously picky as Dickens and it was he who got a team, probably amateurs again' of embroiderers to make a copy of it....well done William...
Having done 1066...and all that...moving on to 1940's....
Thats not a flag hanging on the church...its a parachute....its the re-telling of the story the time the parachute regiment came on down...though one got stuck on the church....rather than panic he kept quiet, waited for the fighting to stop and then ask a passing Tommy to help him down....!
A truck....
A glider....
Above....the terrible gliders...what seemed like a good idea...gliding in to France quietly...turned mostly in to a nightmare with most of the gliders crashing and killing all on board....
Froogy risks being fired back to England....
Having another word...and if im not mistaken, thats my banana!
